Diocese of Lesotho Launches Girls And Boys Friendly Society

The Anglican Church Diocese of Lesotho recently witnessed a momentous occasion with the launch of the Girls’ and Boys’ Friendly Society (GBFS) on the 10th to the 11th of August 2024 at Holy Cross Parish Maputsoe. The event was graced by esteemed guests of honour, the Bishop of Lesotho, Bishop Vicentia Kgabe, who presided over the robing service of new members and leaders on Sunday, and GBFS Leaders, the Worldwide Vice President, Mrs Thembeka Pama, the National President of South Africa, Dr Rabotsamang Shago and the Chaplain of GBFS in the Diocese of Mthatha, Revd Nolitha Masabalala.

Representatives from the dioceses of Mthatha, Free State, and Johannesburg added to the significance of the launch, underscoring the collaborative effort and support for youth engagement within the Anglican Church.

 

The two-day event was meticulously planned to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of GBFS and its mission. Saturday’s activities were focused on educating attendees about the values and objectives of GBFS, emphasizing the importance of nurturing young minds and fostering a sense of “Devotion to one’s nation.”, community service, youth and GBV and understanding oneself as a member of GBFS. The Saturday events were also strengthened by lighting the worldwide candle that symbolizes the connection of the Diocese of Lesotho to the GFS Worldwide.

On Sunday, the highlight of the event was the ribbon-cutting ceremony symbolizing the official commencement of GBFS activities in the diocese. The robing service for new members and leaders conducted by the Bishop of Lesotho was a touching moment, signifying a commitment to upholding the principles of GBFS and serving as role models for their peers.

 

The presence of dignitaries and leaders from various regions underscored the universality and inclusivity of GBFS, uniting individuals from diverse backgrounds in a shared commitment to youth empowerment and community service.

An excited Bishop Vicentia shared, “The launch of GBFS in the Diocese of Lesotho marks a significant milestone, occurring precisely one year after the Province hosted the GFS World Conference in Johannesburg. The Diocese of Lesotho, having previously held observer status, now proudly stands as a full member of GBFS – ACSA following the launch. This welcome addition of another young people’s group presents an additional avenue for the youth in Lesotho to embrace their Anglican identity and harness the talents bestowed upon them by God, both within Lesotho and on the global stage. Moreover, it represents an exceptional opportunity to engage with fellow young Anglicans in our Province and the broader Anglican Communion, fostering the spirit of Christ’s love and collaborating to create a safe and dynamic church and community.”

As the newly initiated members and leaders embark on their journey with GBFS, they carry with them the promise of a brighter future filled with opportunities for personal growth and collective impact. The launch serves as a testament to the unwavering commitment of the Anglican Church in Lesotho to support and empower the youth, ensuring that they are equipped to become leaders of tomorrow.

GBFS World Wide Vice President, Mrs Thembeka Pama, shared, “Lighting of the candle of the World Council 2023 on the 10th was exciting for me connecting GBFS Lesotho to the Province and to the youth of the World fostering inclusivity also striving for excellence. Increasing of branches in the Province mean more Souls are won and there are more young people who are developed holistically.”

 

In the spirit of fellowship and service, the launch of GBFS in the Anglican Church Diocese of Lesotho heralds a new chapter of hope, inspiration, and unity, setting the stage for a transformative and empowering experience for all those involved.
