Diocese of Natal Youth hosted a Collaborative Youth Conference with St Augustine’s Parish (Mdladla)

ANNUAL YOUTH CONFERENCE IN COLLABORATION WITH POST CONFIRMATION AND DIOCESAN YOUTH

The Diocesan Natal Youth, in collaboration with Post Confirmation and the Parish of Umlazi, recently hosted a highly successful conference, bringing together over 300 young people from across the region. The event, themed “Fulfilling God’s Mission in Our Time,” took place on December 5-8, 2024, at St Augustine Parish of Umlazi.

The conference aimed to empower young people to take an active role in fulfilling God’s mission in their communities. Through a series of workshops, seminars, and worship sessions, participants were equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to make a positive impact.

Mr Mzamo Zondi led a session on mental health and the importance of young people looking out for signs amd many things that might lead them to depression.

The conference was organised by the Youth Diocesan Chaplain, Revd Sibiya, Post Confirmation Chaplain Revd Mbambo, Cannon T.L. Zikhali, and the Parish of Umlazi Executive team [Londeka Mahlaba , Noluthando Mlaba, Owethu Mdlangathi, Philasande Khubheka, Andile Nyandeni,Amanda Mthembu] . The journey to hosting the event was not without its challenges, but the team’s dedication and perseverance paid off. The conference achieved its purpose of empowering young people to take an active role in fulfilling God’s mission. Participants left the event feeling inspired, motivated, and equipped to make a positive impact in their communities. The Parish of Umlazi’s initiative to host a Youth Conference annually has been a success for the past 25 years, providing a platform for young people to come together and deepen their faith.

Participants took away valuable lessons and insights, as well as action plans for implementing positive change in their communities. “I’m excited to go back to my community and share what I’ve learned,” said Samkelo, a participant. Fulfilling God’s Mission in Our Time: As followers of Christ, we are called to participate in God’s mission to redeem and restore the world. Our theme emphasizes the importance of embracing this calling and living out our faith in a way that makes a tangible impact in our communities. Praise, Prayer and Worship was endless in this gathering, with young peoole leading it through the four days, tirelessly.

In collaboration with Mother’s Union and Diocesan Youth Office, a presentation was done by MU Eco Champ mam’ Pinky from All Saints Parish (Bellair), three fruit trees were planted on Saturday and each conference delegate went home with Kale seeds donated by the people of Mozambique. The fourth tree was planted on Sunday by Bishop Nkosinathi who gave a background on why as people of faith we plant treets as an act of worship and mission (5th Mark of Mission nad Communion Forest)

Despite facing several challenges during the planning and execution of the event, the Parish of Umlazi Executive team and Youth chaplain persevered and found creative solutions. “We’re grateful for the support of our partners and sponsors, who helped make the event a success,” said Andile Mvelase. The conference is expected to have a lasting impact on the Youth Family and its broader community. “We envision a future where young people are empowered to take an active role in fulfilling God’s mission, and we’re committed to supporting and equipping them on this journey,” said Revd Mbambo.
