The Parish of St Christopher’s in Sobantu in Pietermaritzburg welcomed 51 new members of Girls and Bafana’s Friendly Society (GBFS) at a service where Bishop Nkosinathi Ndwandwe was Preaching, Presiding, Licensing of young Lay Ministers and conducting Confirmation. What was beautiful to witness was that some of the Confirmants were also later to be robed to the guild.
Other GBFS members from the Diocese came in numbers to support, mostly from St Bride’s (Magabheni) together with their leader, present also was the Diocesan GBFS President and Prince of Peace (Inanda) BFS leader came to welcome these beautiful young people into the guild.
Bishop in his sermon cautioned people of positions and status in church that can easily derail one from the mission of Christ. The church was filled with a mixture of our rich Anglican hymns accompanied by the organ and choruses with the jemba drums, the beats and bells gracing this auspicious celebrating of young people choosing their path in Christ. Each member committed to the guild pilars, pledge and commitment. The Clergy spouse members of Mother’s Union assisted by putting pins to complete the guild uniform of GBFS. Three parish GBFS leaders were commissioned to work in the parish together with the rector, Revd. Zipho Mbambo.
Two palm trees were planted, one by Bishop and Confirmants and the other by GBFS and Bishop, their commitment is that weekly they will come to church to nurture these trees as a sign of their grown in faith!
